strengths: at least three, use the bullet points
- Oz is very organised, to the point of knowing exactly where all of his possessions are at any given time, and being able to track down a book in the library whether it's on its shelf or not.
- He's very diligent, and is one of those annoying types who actually enjoys hard work.
- He has an almost magical aptitude for language that he takes to extreme lengths by learning as many languages as he can, self-taught or otherwise.
weaknesses: at least three, use the bullet points
- He can be fairly intimidated by large groups and doesn't like working under observation, even if he's aware he's doing things right.
- Oz is bad at giving advice which unfortunately doesn't stop him trying, often with disastrous results.
- He's very easy to wind up if you know how to press his buttons, and pretty funny when he's angry, which just angers him more.
fears: at least two, use the bullet points
- Rejection. He gets overly caution in some situations just from fear of driving people away.
- Flying. Even watching Quidditch makes him queasy. Oddly, he's not afraid of falling, just doesn't like being on a broom, a carpet, or even a plane.
overall: a paragraph or two about their personality Oz is an oddly conflicting type of person. As his job choice would suggest, he's an avid reader and isn't bored by quiet environments and repetitive tasks like organising bookshelves and cataloging withdrawn and returned books. He's a self-described old man at heart, and his vision of a perfect evening consists of curling up on the couch with a cup of tea and a good book, perhaps with a jazz record filling in the background noise, and one of his many half-kneazles curled at his feet. However, he stays true to his Ravenclaw roots and is in constant pursuit of knowledge. Working in arguably the largest library of magical tomes in Britain doesn't satisfy that thirst, and so during holidays he dons his hiking gear and takes off for somewhere new. His particular passion relates to integrating himself into societies of magical creatures - centaurs, mermaids, even giants - and making a valiant attempt to learn their language and customs. Oz is multicultural, friendly, approachable and just this side of cautious, with a healthy obsession with being helpful. In terms of personality his main weakness lies in his reluctance to open up and his aforementioned fear of rejection that can cause his to seem reserved and aloof.
background mother: Victoria Vance (nee Archer), 53, software developer. father: Samuel Vance, 50, speech therapist. siblings: Edith McCulloch (nee Vance), 30, audio technician. other relatives: Ian McCulloch, 31, webcomic artist/stay-at-home dad, brother-in-law. Robert McCulloch, 16, nephew. Danielle McCulloch, 13, niece. overall: Born in a sizeable town about half an hour from Glasgow's city centre, Oz grew up with a better understanding of the muggle world than the wizarding one. He was sent to the same muggle primary school as his sister - a measure Sam had taken to keep his family out of the war waging in the wizarding world - and showed a great deal of interest in pretty much everything, even if he was branded a trouble maker for his energetic and enthusiastic disposition. The end of the war had more or less no effect on him, as his parents kept him in muggle education to stop from upsetting any friendships he had built, and he was taught about magic at home. He had an uneventful childhood, without any magical blowouts during hissy fits, unlike his sister who had a tendency to light the curtains on fire when she got cross. In fact, his parents were concerned once his eleventh birthday came and he had showed no signs of magic whatsoever. He was enrolled at Hogwarts anyway, and the veritable explosion when he went to buy his first wand banished any fears he might have been non-magical. In his first year Oz gathered a well rounded group of friends from each of the houses - some of them younger siblings of Edith's friends - and kept up his trend of being exceptionally studious and suspiciously excitable until fourth year, when he came home at Christmas glum and generally unresponsive to attempts to cheer him up. As he had locked himself in his room, Edith had to explain that he'd experienced his first romantic rejection and was taking it a little worse than she, or anyone really, expected. That lack of enthusiasm, though drastically affecting his social life, didn't affect his grades, and he aced every one of his end-of-year tests, finished all of his essays in the first fortnight of the summer holidays, then disappeared on a camping trip with his muggle friends for the remainder of the summer. He came back fresh-faced and cheerful and seeming a lot more grown up, and in response to this attitude his parents gifted him a part-Kneazle cat that he dubbed Smooshy-face the trouble-maker, or 'Face' for short. He made short work of his O.W.L.s, and was offered the place of prefect in sixth year which he declined - he was never the type to tell other people what to do. He also chose not to become a prefect in seventh year, instead opting to join the dueling club - which he was terrible at, but enjoyed - and actually socialise for the first time since his agonising embarrassment in fourth year. He studied hard and finished seventh year with a girlfriend, five A's and above in his N.E.W.T.s, and an apparition license. He took a year out to attend college to gain some muggle qualifications - maths, English, French and computing - and, discovering his aptitude for language, worked his butt off to pay for night classes in Japanese. It was during that period in his life that his girlfriend deemed him 'obsessive and childish', and left him to follow her own path. It wasn't such a disaster this time around; instead of moping in his room, Oz took his savings and traveled, searching for a goal, some way to use his wasted talents. He worked mostly as an English tutor in France and later in Japan, and for a short while as an interpreter for Japan's border controls, before applying as a librarian at Mahoutokoro - a magic school situated in Japan but very different from Hogwarts in terms of teaching methods and student politics. He had several flings but never settled down, deeming himself 'not the dating type', and after a failed relationship with a co-worker he found it too awkward to return and handed in his resignation. He returned to Britain and found the same position empty at Hogwarts, and he was eager to return to the castle's welcoming atmosphere. He found a flat in Aberdeen, and was elated when he was hired despite his age. It turned out to be one of the most interesting, taxing jobs he ever acquired, but also one of the most enjoyable, as evidenced by the fact he's been at it for three years and isn't bored yet.
