The earliest known recording of a metahuman, known more commonly as “the Gifted” dates back to the earliest days of civilization. Pharaohs, legendary heroes, even many of the gods of old have the traits of a genetically superior human. However, as technology became more and more modern, mankind began to ostracize and shun its brethren. Eventually, having a Gift meant you became a second class citizen.
Towards the early 1960s, a group of powerful Gifted banned together and created a new nation. Using their many Gifts, they built a large island from a small and inhabited islandin the mid-Pacific Ocean. As this was the height of the Cold War, both Russia and the United States competed to help the Island build its infrastructure and with the Gifteds’s help the island was completely self sustaining. Soon, a grand institute of learning was created, a school for Gifted. Part grade school, part university, it employed a great deal of many people in the capital city of Ashburn. The natives of the island soon embraced the newcomers to their island, having tales of legends and prophecies that foretold of the arrival of many Gifted, and viewing them as the “Children of God”. This leads many scholars to believe that the original Ashburn people once had a large number of Gifted members with abilities that included seeing the future.
Now, in the year 2012, Ashburn is a neutral state with inhabitants from many nations, most from the United States. As it stands, the economy is thriving in a world rattled in depression, and many normal people flock to the island for a new start.
